Steps to Take When Your Furnace Isn’t Functioning Properly

Don’t panic — chances are good that your furnace problems aren’t a sign that it’s about to break down. You may not need to spend fistfuls of money on expensive furnace repairs or even an entire furnace replacement. The outcome all depends on why your furnace has stopped producing heat.

Furnace Troubleshooting

Before you call a repair service, try the following troubleshooting steps for furnace problems.

Check Your Thermostat

Since the thermostat controls your home’s temperature, start there. Your thermostat may not even be on, or it could require new batteries. If it is working, check to see that it’s set to Heat.

Homes that experience inconsistent heat may have a deeper issue, but it’s still not necessarily an emergent problem. The thermostat may be in a poor location, sensing heat from other sources. Fixing the issue could be as simple as taking away the alternate heat source.

If your home has a smart thermostat, it could be experiencing a glitch. Check the thermostat’s manual to see how you can reset it. Doing so can clear up any software problems and restore function.

Check Your Circuit Breaker

Furnaces use a lot of power, and they can occasionally trip a breaker. This can happen when power is restored after an outage. When you’re at the breaker box, look for one that’s flipped. Try turning it back on and see whether the heat starts back up.

Check the Filter

When filters get clogged, they no longer let air flow through. If your furnace’s filter hasn’t been changed in a while, that will hinder your furnace’s ability to push air and heat the house.

Remove the filter and examine it. If it’s clogged, throw it away and replace it with a new one. Filters should be replaced every 30 to 90 days anyway. Never run the furnace without a filter, however. The filter catches contaminants and particles that could harm your furnace and the home’s occupants.

Check the Pilot Light

If your furnace uses gas, check whether the pilot light has gone out. The gas may have gotten turned off, so look for a gas handle and make sure it’s set to the “on” or “open” position. If the instructions for relighting the pilot light aren’t printed directly on the furnace, check the manufacturer’s website.

Furnace Repair Is Best Left to the Professionals

Many furnace issues will require an experienced furnace repair specialist. If you smell gas, you need to call your gas provider immediately. They may be able to locate the leak and fix it, but they might also defer to an HVAC specialist for the final repair.

Keep an ear out for any strange noises coming from your furnace, too. Odd sounds like booming or rattling can indicate serious problems and should be addressed by professionals.
